Jim Maivald

Jim is a designer, consultant and Adobe Certified Expert and Instructor in Dreamweaver with over 25 years of experience in the graphic design industry and 12 years building effective websites. He has design and production experience in all areas of print and Web design. Jim has been editor of several graphic design and electronic publishing magazines. He is also an author of hundreds of articles on graphic design and electronic publishing, as well as several books. He is the author of Dreamweaver CS5: Classroom in a Book (Adobe Press, 2010), Introduction to Adobe Edge Preview (Peachpit Press, 2011), The Designer's Guide to Adobe InDesign and XML (Adobe Press, 2008) and Photoshop Complete, version CS5 (Complete Books 2010).   • Website Prototyping (9:30–10:15)

  • Develop and perfect your website design concepts using Photoshop, Illustrator, and Fireworks. You’ll learn how to create a presentation-quality mock-up of your website quickly and easily using tools you may already know without writing a line of code.

  • Dreamweaver Basics (10:15–11:30)

  • You’ll begin creating a site with the built-in tools that make page creation in Dreamweaver CS5.5 so easy and efficient. As you learn to work with the tools, workspace and panels in Dreamweaver CS5.5, you’ll add images, links, navigation and more to your web pages with point-and-click simplicity.

    What's New in Dreamweaver CS5.5 (11:45–12:15)

    Check out the new features and capabilities offered by CS5.5. See how Dreamweaver continues to stay at the forefront of HTML editors. Learn how to work faster and smarter inside Dreamweaver and even connect into systems like WordPress and Joomla.

    CSS Basics (1:15–1:45)

    Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is the web standard for formatting pages and building effective browser and search engine-friendly sites. You'll learn the foundation concepts of how and why to use CSS in a straightforward and easy-to-understand manner. By the end of this session, you'll be editing and formatting your CSS-based layouts like a pro.

    Intro to Media Queries for Mobile Web Support  (1:45–2:15)

    Media queries is a new feature of Dreamweaver that allows you support a variety of web and mobile devices. Learn how to build web pages that automatically support cell phones and mobile devices.

    CSS – The Next Level (2:15–2:45)

    Now that you can create and edit your CSS-based site in Dreamweaver CS5.5, you’ll build on your new skills by previewing some of the web’s coolest new technology trends and techniques coming in HTML5 and CSS3.

    BREAK (2:45 - 3:00)

    Adding Rich Media to your Website  (3:00–3:45)

    We'll explore how Dreamweaver allows you to add rich media files directly to our web pages, such as Flash (.swf) and Flash video (.flv). But Dreamweaver doesn't stop there, rich media also includes a whole new crop of standards-based animation and video file formats supported driectly by HTML5 and CSS3. Learn how Dreamweaver helps to manage these new media elements and how web browsers support them.

    Introduction to Spry and Dynamic Content  (3:45-4:30)

    Have you heard the term 'Web 2.0'? It combines HTML and CSS with JavaScript to produce amazing interactive capabilities for your site. Adobe created the Spry framework to make this these techniques easy as point and click to create and implement. Learn how to building more interactive experiences for your customers and visitors...without having to write a line of JavaScript code at all! We'll also look at our Spry pages on the iPhone and Android simulators to show our interactive experiences running on mobile devices.

The main campus of this multi-campus urban institution is situated on 42 acres in the historic Charlestown section of Boston in the shadows of the historic Bunker Hill Monument and the spectacular Zakim Bridge. The campus is literally steps away from the MBTA Community College stop on the Orange Line and is accessible from all major thoroughfares; it is also equipped with parking facilities for over 500 vehicles. This ideal location is minutes from downtown Boston.

By Public Transportation
Bunker Hill Community College is conveniently located at the MBTA Rapid Transit Orange Line’s Community College Station. Connections to the Orange Line can be made at MBTA subway stations throughout the system. Follow the Rapid Transit System maps posted in each station depicting the Forest Hills-Oak Grove (Orange) Line. Take the train to the Community College Station. The campus front door is only steps from the station exit.

By Car From the North and West Via I-95 (Route 128); I-93
Follow I-95/128 to Exit 37A (Route I-93 South to Boston). From the North, follow I-93 South to Exit 28. Pass through Sullivan Square and proceed straight onto New Rutherford Avenue. The Hood Dairy will be on the right as you proceed on New Rutherford Avenue and shortly after, Bunker Hill Community College will also be on the right. Enter on the College’s perimeter road and follow signs to Student Parking (Lots #1 & #2).

From Route 2 & Memorial Drive
Follow Route 2 to signs for Cambridge and Memorial Drive. Take Memorial Drive East along the Charles River past Harvard University. Enter “ Memorial Drive East” underpass and continue past MIT. Continue on Memorial Drive along Charles River. Bear right as road curves over water and then to the left onto Edwin Land Boulevard (toward Charlestown). Continue on Land Boulevard past Royal Sonesta Hotel (on the right) and straight ahead across major intersection (traffic lights) onto the Gilmore Bridge. At the end of bridge, turn right at traffic lights and take first right again into the BHCC Student Parking Lot entrance. At stop sign turn right or left, and proceed to BHCC Student Parking (Lots #1 & #2).

Via I-90 (Massachusetts Turnpike)
Follow I-90 East to Exit 18 (Allston-Cambridge). After toll plaza, follow ramp directions to “Cambridge.” At the traffic light, go straight across the intersection and across the bridge over the Charles River. At the end of the bridge, take a right at traffic lights onto Memorial Drive. Enter “ Memorial Drive East” underpass and continue past MIT. Continue on Memorial Drive along Charles River. Bear right as road curves over water (toward Charlestown) and then to the left onto Edwin Land Boulevard. Continue on Land Boulevard past Royal Sonesta Hotel (on the right) and straight ahead across major intersection (traffic lights) onto the Gilmore Bridge. At the end of bridge, turn right at traffic lights and take first right again into BHCC student parking lot entrance. Via Route 3 North and the Southeast Expressway (I-93 North)
Follow Expressway through the Liberty (South Station) Tunnel. Continue past the TD Banknorth Garden and take Exit 28. At the bottom of the ramp, take right onto Washington Street. At next light take another right onto New Rutherford Avenue.As you pass the Hood Dairy plant, Bunker Hill Community College is on the right. Enter via perimeter road and follow signs to Student Parking (Lots #1 & #2).

From the Northeast Via Tobin ( Mystic River) Bridge - Route 1 South
Coming off the bridge, bear right and follow signs for “Charlestown/Rutherford Avenue.” At the traffic light, take a left turn into the far right lane onto New Rutherford Avenue that will bring you to Austin Street. Take a left at the U-turn before the traffic light to reverse direction on New Rutherford Avenue (Bunker Hill Community College will be visible on the far right). After the U-turn, the BHCC Student Parking Lot entrance will be on the right. Take first right into BHCC student parking lot entrance. At stop sign turn right or left, and proceed to BHCC Student Parking (Lots #1 & #2).
