The session will explore what ePUB is – and what it is not – and we'll discuss the benefits, limitations, and caveats of ePUB. We'll also take a look at other options when it comes to digital distribution, such as PDF, and when to use each. The session will go into considerations that need to be made when repurposing content from print to an ePUB version.
InDesign text styles are the foundation of an ePUB file and this session will cover creating and perfecting character and paragraph styles for greater control of your exported file. We'll also cover importing text from outside sources, quickly and easily formatting that text, and working with style options such as drop caps and nested styles. We'll examine how styles are translated in the ePUB, what works and what doesn't, and what you do and don't have control over.
Unless you're creating a novel with strictly text as content, chances are you'll want images in your finished ePUB. This session will cover formatting graphics and images for best results in the ePUB file – including working with captions, positioning, and dealing with text wrap. We'll also explore the pros and cons of working with InDesign's book feature for long documents and how it relates to creating an ideal ePUB file.
One of the greatest benefits of an ePUB file is the ability to jump around and find what you need quickly. This session will discuss creating the navigation necessary to fly through the digital file. We'll discuss creating and utilizing hyperlinks and cross-references, as well as creating a Table of Contents that will provide even more file navigation.
While exporting to an ePUB is a relatively quick and painless procedure, the ePUB process isn't over yet! InDesign provides the foundation for the ePUB file, but in this session we'll dig into the ePUB, look at and massage the underlying CSS file that is created, and really customize the final product. We'll learn how to extract the CSS file and make changes to the code, discuss font issues that might crop up, and learn how to validate the file. Don't let the thought of CSS scare you...remember, InDesign did most of the work for you already!
So, what to do with that newly-minted ePUB file of yours? You've set up the foundation in InDesign, massaged the CSS, and validated the ePUB file...what's next? In this session, we'll discuss the different devices and platforms you might want to publish to, including special consideration for creating a Kindle-compatible file. We'll discuss some publishing systems available to get the widest distribution of your final product. We'll also do a "show and tell" to illustrate what to expect from different devices, such as the Kindle and the iPad. We'll wrap up the day with a Q & A session .
