WHAT ARE ALL THESE DIGITAL PUBLISHING OPTIONS? (9:00–9:30)
Digital Publishing is a term being tossed about a lot these days, but what does it really mean? This short session will cover some of the digital publishing options available, look at the immediate future of digital publishing, and examine what works best in specific situations.
WORKING WITH TEXT AND STYLES IN INDESIGN (9:30–10:30)
There are a few core tasks you'll need to be familiar with in InDesign before jumping into digital publishing. Getting a handle on working with text is one of the most important. This session will cover working with imported text, creating and exporting text styles, and font considerations.
BREAK (10:30-10:45)
WORKING WITH IMAGES, LONG DOCUMENTS, AND NAVIGATION IN INDESIGN (10:45–12:00)
This session will cover formatting graphics and images for best results. We'll also explore InDesign's book feature for long documents and we'll discuss creating and utilizing hyperlinks and cross-references. Finally, we'll discuss how a Table of Contents provides the ultimate in navigation within the finished digital publication.
LUNCH ON YOUR OWN (12:00–1:15)
INDESIGN TO EPUB (1:15–2:30)
ePub is a standard for digital books that has been adopted by many of the heavy-hitters in the eBook reader market, like Apple and Barnes & Noble. It also provides an intermediate step on the way to creating an eBook for the Kindle. We'll look at the workflow involved to repurpose existing print files and how best to prepare InDesign files for export to ePub. The session will also address the need to delve a bit into the resulting CSS and HTML files and the tweaks needed to craft a better ePub file.
BREAK (2:30-2:45)
MAGAZINE CREATION IN INDESIGN WITH ADOBE DPS (2:45–3:45)
In this session, we'll discuss how InDesign works with the Adobe Digital Publishing Suite—and others like it—to create subscription-based digital publications for mobile devices. We'll take a look at the new features introduced with InDesign CS6 that make the creation process much easier. Whether you have a monthly magazine or a twice-yearly catalog, InDesign to Adobe DPS might be the solution you're looking for.
INDESIGN TO iBOOKS AUTHOR (3:45–4:30)
Apple jumped even further into the digital publishing pool in early 2012 with the introduction of iBooks Author. This free tool lets you create rich interactive, multi-gesture books for the iPad. Touted as a way to make textbooks, the uses for this tool extend to manuals, instructional text, children's books, and more. We'll discuss how InDesign fits in this Apple-centric workflow and how to repurspose existing InDesign content into this format. Lastly, the session will cover other interactive formats, such as interactive PDFs.
